What we cut it out of
Four Rowmark Duets laminates are standard, cut from 12 × 24 in sheets. Two-ply means the cutter removes the colored cap and exposes a contrasting core, so the legend cannot wear off — there is no ink involved. The 1/16 in Laser XT is rigid; the .020 in Flexible is thin, adhesive-backed and will follow a curve. Anything outside these four is available on request, with a little more lead time.
Two plates the standards actually specify
Most legend plates are a matter of taste. Two of them are not. An emergency stop collar and a UL 508A data plate both have their artwork dictated by a standard, and an inspector will read them. Both are on the bench above, pre-set to the requirement, and both are cited here so you can check us rather than take our word.
§10.7.3 puts the color on two different parts. The actuator is red. The background immediately around it is yellow — and on a panel door, that background is this plate. A push-button actuator must be palm or mushroom-head type. ISO 13850 asks for the same two colors, so a machine built to either standard lands in the same place.
§10.7.2 rules out flat switches and graphic representations, which is the clause that stops an HMI soft key from counting as an emergency stop.
Which is why the round E-Stop collar on the bench defaults to Caution Yellow with a black core, not to red. Ask us for a red one and we will ask you back — red belongs on the mushroom head, and spending it on the collar is how a machine ends up with red on red.
NEC 409.110 is the marking list for an industrial control panel, and it is short enough to quote:
- Manufacturer’s name, trademark or other identifying marking.
- Supply voltage, number of phases, frequency, and full-load current for each incoming supply circuit.
- A note where more than one disconnect is required to de-energize the panel.
- The short-circuit current rating of the panel — from a listed and labeled assembly, or established by an approved method.
- The electrical wiring diagram, or the number of a separate one.
- The enclosure type number.
The nameplate builder carries that list, with the clause number against every field, and adds the rest of what a panel shop puts on a data plate: manufacture date, project number, serial and panel tag, largest motor FLA, conduit fitting note and build standard. It tells you which of the required markings are still blank while you type. SCCR is normally established by the UL 508A Supplement SB method — bring us the number your calculation lands on and we cut the plate.
The UL Listing Mark is not ours to print. That label is issued to your shop under your own Follow-Up Service and applied by you. So the plate carries a keep-out area for it, blank by default, with an engraved border only if you ask for one. Measure your own label stock and type the size into the builder — the default box is a starting point, not a standard.
